But it will occupy an evening If Tom Clancy didn't draw inspiration from this movie for Red October I'd be very surprised.
Despite of being a TV-Production (and showing this sometimes) "Hostile Waters" is a tense and absorbing film about a drama, that took place in a strange and dangerous period of time, we call the "Cold War"; a military disaster, that is still threatening us today.
Because Martin Sheen's performance as the American skipjack class attack submarine captain is weak. Hostile Waters de MechGun Joe.
I don't mean lots of blood & gore but a keep you on the edge of your seat kind of movie such as this one.

The important thing about "Hostile Waters" is, that it shows the story from a unusual point of view (the soviet submarine- crew), without high-tech gimmicks and without the "..it must be a historical fact, because I saw it in a John Wayne Film.." nonsense (or: "..because i read it in a Tom Clancy book"). Amazon calculates a product’s star ratings based on a machine learned model instead of a raw data average. Nothing special. With zero information, all the characters seem to know facts about remote events, whether in Moscow or Washington or in other compartments of the sub or on the adversary's sub.
